What I’ve been reading this week, 25 January 2019

Four decades of innovation, attitude at altitude, some wonderful landscape images, and do bothies really need a helping hand?
Outdoors
A visit to the new Kingshouse Hotel, Glen Coe – Richard Baynes investigates the rebuilt Kingshouse.
The Great Outdoors 40 Years Special Awards: Four Decades of Innovation – I was pleased to contribute to this interesting category in last year’s TGO Awards. We’ve published the list online.
Clouds & mist & sun & snow: a glorious day in the Cairngorms – Chris Townsend enjoyed a fantastic-looking day in the Cairngorms.
Attitude at altitude: why are some walkers more remote than the landscape? – Ben Dolphin’s latest column for The Press and Journal.
How to make a crampon bag from jeans and milk bottles – enterprising!
Mountain rescue: Why bothies need a helping hand – a photo essay – an interesting read, although people close to the matter say that the MBA is coping better than this article perhaps suggests.
Photography
This photo (1) – a wonderful photo diary from David Lintern.
First Snow Sunrise on Pen y Fan 17th January 2019 – some lovely images from Neil Mansfield.
A Review of 35mm Kodak Ektachrome E100 Film – this is the best review of the new Ektachrome slide film I’ve seen so far. I have a roll in my Olympus OM-2n at the moment.
Writing and publishing
Poetry sales soar as political millennials search for clarity – I love this story. ‘Poetry is resonating with people who are looking for understanding. It is a really good way to explore complex, difficult emotions and uncertainty.’
Opinion: Why Giving Readers Free Books for Reviews is Unethical – a controversial piece by Mark Horrell. Although I don’t completely agree with this viewpoint, I have some sympathy for it; the reviewing system on Amazon is broken.
